10 Things you don’t know about pajamas

We might wear our PJs every day, but how much do you really know about them?

1. Coco Chanel introduced lounging pajamas in the 20’s and revolutionlized pajamas for women.  After that, they became a totally acceptable and fashionable alternative to the traditional long nightshirt.

2. People in Africa and South Asia call their PJs “night suits”.

3. The traditional pajama set of a jacket-style shirt and pants came through Britian, but orginated from Muslims in India.

4. Before 1950, it was common for pajamas to have a drop seat to make it easy to use the the bathroom.  We see this feature on our Flapjacks as a novelty, but who knew it was a regular thing?

5. In Japan, it’s totally acceptable to wear a set of silk PJs out in the day or evening!

6. The World’s Largest Footed Pajama Party was held in Austin, Texas on March 11, 2012 where 309 adults were dressed in their footies and broke the Guiness World Record.

7. In eastern China, it is not unusual in the late afternoon or evening, for adults to wear their pajamas in public around their local neighborhood.

8. It’s thought that footed pajamas came about to protect people’s feet from bed bugs and termites.  Eek!

9. In the roaring 20’s high society men and women would wear their PJs to the beach.

10. Nightcaps were popular to wear to bed in the 19th century.  The were intended to keep people’s heads warm, but got their long pointy shape so that they were long enough to wear as a scarf, but not long enough to pose a choking hazard.

Who knew?!

What you need for your summer staycation

Sometimes the most relaxing kind of vacation is when you have absolutely no where to go.  No bags to pack.  No itinerary to follow. No plane to catch.  Just time to veg out and enjoy being.

Instead of jetting off to some other destination a summer staycation – a vacation at home – can be just what you need.  And with a little advance planning your staycation can be relaxing and fun and just as good as a trip away.

Here are some tips and things to cosider when planning your summer staycation:

Entertainment

Chances are you’ll spend a lot of time just chilling out on your staycation, and you’ll want some entertainment, so gather what you think you’ll want:

– A stack of good books.

– Favorite movies.

– Craft projects.

– Games you may want to play.

Activities

Why not try out something you’ve always wanted to do or been meaning to do during your staycation?

– Camp in your own back yard.

– Go to the water park.

– Visit a neighboring town.

– Be a tourist in your own city.  Explore museums, the zoo, or aquarium.

– Have a neighborhood block party.

– Find a drive in movie theater or outdoor film festival.

– Host a family reunion.

– Go tubing!

Food

It’s probably a good idea to plan out your meals ahead of time.  That way you won’t have to spend your precious time at the grocery store or deciding what to do for dinner.

If you’re into cooking, decide what you’ll cook when and get everything you need. Not a cook?  Stock up on snacks and treats and make sure you have plenty of take out menus on hand.

You also may want to make reservtions ahead of time at your favorite restaurants!

The key is to make some plans ahead of time so you can enjoy your time off at home.  And remember, no cleaning or household chores are alowed!  This is time for pure relaxation and fun, just as if you were off in some other place!

8 Things to Do in Your PJs this Weekend

Sometimes you just need a break. Whether you’ve had a hard week or you’re just feeling tired out from the day to day hustle.

So this weekend, we give you permission to be totally and completely lazy! Stay in your pajamas all day long, relax, and maybe even do something you wouldn’t normally do…

Here are 8 things to do in your pajamas this weekend:

1.  Have an ice cream sundae party.

Ahhh…real ice cream sundaes?  Yes, pleeeeease.  Get out your favorite ice cream flavor, sprinkes, whip cream, and chocolate sauce and go to town.  If you’re a peanut butter lover, you’ve got to check out this recipe for Friendly’s peanut butter sauce…don’t forget the Reese’s pieces!  Yum!!!

Check out these silly girls who take ice cream sundaes in pajamas to a whole new level!

2. Lifetime movie marathon, anyone?

Yep, they are totally cheezy with predictable and often absurd story lines – a guilty pleasure for sure. but there’s just something about a good Lifetime movie that we can’t quite quit. Check for the latest schedule here.

3. Get messy & bake some cookies!

Baking cookies is messy and takes time.  So stay in your jammies and declare it a cookie day – the household chores can wait! Bake your favorite recipe, have fun decorating, and enjoy the yummy fruits of your labor.

4.  Learn to Yo-Yo.

I know, a little adolescent, but Saturday is National Yo-Yo Day after all! So channel your inner child brush up on your skills.  You’ll be walking the dog in no time!

5. Read Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Chances are you’ve seen the movie, but have you read the book? You might be interested to learn that the Holly Golightly portrayed in Truman Copote’s orginal work is a bit different – and darker – that the character in the movie!

6.  Do something crafty.

Get creative! Knit a blanket or sew an easy tote bag.  Maybe screen print a cool t-shirt for Father’s Day? We found a whole bunch of fun ideas on Pinterest for weekend crafting.

7. (Pajama) Jam to the oldies.

When’s the last time you chilled out and enjoyed your favorite music from way, way back? Whether the oldies of your day are on vinyl or i-tunes, break them out and get down.  Maybe it’s Motown, The Beatles, Disco, 80’s Hair Bands, or possibly some early Britney Spears.  It’s all about your jams, in your jams!

8.  Do a jigsaw puzzle.

Jigsaw puzzles take many hours to complete, and we think pajamas are pretty much the only way to dress for it.  Not only are they fun to do with friends and family, but puzzles are actually a good way to keep your brain sharp too – using both side of your brain with logic and creativity.  So ditch the i-pad and turn off the TV and instead do something low tech this weekend.  We love this colorful cereal box puzzle!
