It’s Holiday Movie Time!

It’s the holiday season, which means time for holiday movie pajama nights! Let’s face it, it’s cold and dark outside and there’s no better reason to stay in, get cozy, and watch a holiday classic with some hot cocoa and kettle corn!

Today we’re sharing our top ten favorite holiday movies:

1. White Christmas – Nothing says classic holiday like White Christmas and Bing Crosby. This is a must-watch for the music and dancing. So fun!

2. The Muppet Christmas Carol – The Muppet characters tell the story of the classic Dickens holiday tale. We all need a little Miss Piggy and Kermit around the holidays!

3. Holiday Inn – Another classic musical holiday movie complete with the team of Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. The song “White Christmas” actually originated from this movie.

4. Elf – The goofy story of Buddy the Elf played by Will Farrell. Totally silly and super cute!

5. Christmas Vacation – The Griswold family – need we say more?  In my family it’s a requirement to watch this movie at least once during the holidays. Cousin Eddie and company will get you every time.

6. The Holiday – A love story split between LA and the English country side. This one will give you a great boost of holiday spirit (and is worth watching just to see the scenes of Kate Winslett’s character’s majestic English cottage!)

7. Love Actually – Such a feel good movie, with an a-list cast, and a heart-warming message that “love is actually all around us”…

8. How the Grinch Stole Christmas – Jim Carrey is fantastic  and really funny as the Grinch in this Dr. Suess classic. Best described as magical.

9. T’was the Night Before Christmas – If you haven’t seen it, this is the story of a town coming together to get back on Santa’s nice list after he gets an insulting letter.  Trust me, the singing mice don’t disappoint!

10. Frosty the Snowman – I look forward to watching this one every year. Another magical movie with lots of heart.

7 Ways to Fall Asleep Faster

Falling asleep after a long day can sometimes be a challenge. Especially if you’re feeling charged up and stressed out and have a lot on your mind.

We’ve gathered some tips for shaking off the day and getting to sleep faster. You might even consider doing one or more of these things regularly and build a night time ritual. Doing these things regularly can act as a cue to your body that it’s time to slow down and relax, making it even easier to drift off.

1. Take a bath or hot shower.

I won’t go into the science, but basically raising your body temp helps you get to sleep faster. Use lavender or some other aromatherapy for even better results. There’s something very soothing about getting into warm PJs after a nice hot bath!

2. Enjoy a cup of herbal tea.

Sitting and sipping a cup of hot herbal tea is a great way to relax into sleep mode. Yogi Honey Lavender Stress Relief is my favorite soothing tea with lavender, mint, and chamomile. Make this into your nightly thing and you’re likely to look forward to it each night!

3. Be sure your room is dark enough.

If there’s any kind of light around you, it will definitely be harder to fall asleep. If it’s a street light or even a bight moon, you might invest in black out shades or curtains. Or consider using a mask like this one.

4. Read to relax.

If your mind is racing and you can’t stop obsessing over the events of the day, reading before bed is a surefire way to distract yourself. Sometimes if you’re in the middle of a really good book, reading it before bed might be a little too stimulating. If that’s the case, pick up something less exciting – maybe a magazine article – and lull yourself to la la land…

5. Release your thoughts.

Depending on what’s going on in your life, you may need to release some of your thoughts and ideas in order to clear your head and get to sleep. Use a journal to work out what’s occupying your mind for a few minutes before bed, and you’re bound to find it easier to relax.

If you are not so into writing, you may want to get a set of Guatemalan worry dolls. Tell your concerns to these tiny dolls, and place them under your pillow. The legend is that the dolls take on your worries and allow you to rest peacefully. Try it out!

6. Visualize your happy place.

Picture a relaxing and serene place. Think about what is most soothing about that place. Maybe the sound of the waves crashing in shore. The feel of cool grass beneath your feet. The warm sun or gentle breeze on your face. Imagine yourself there, feel the sensations, and let any tension melt away.

7. Check your comfort level.

If you toss and turn before sleep, give it some thought. Are your pajamas and bedding truly comfortable? When you get into bed are you able to easily find a comfy sleeping position? If not, you may need to switch out your PJs or your pillow or blanket. Check out this article for more information on when to replace you

Fall Pajama Reading List

“Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog it’s too dark to read.”

-Groucho Marx

I don’t know about you, but falling leaves, golden light, and cooler temps just make me want to curl up with a cup of tea and get lost in a great book!  Here are the books making the top of our fall reading list…

First, here’s a book recommendation, from Ellie, our very own President and Founder:

Phantom Instinct by Meg Gardiner

There is nothing better than starting a book you simply cannot put down. My favorite writer extraordinaire of thrillers is my friend Meg Gardiner. Her latest book, out this past summer, “Phantom Instinct” appeared on the “Best Books of Summer” for O Magazine. The Associated Press said this about “Phantom Instinct”:

“’Phantom Instinct’ is simply a fantastic story, told at breakneck speed. Gardiner is one of the best thriller writers around, and this is arguably her best work yet. ‘Phantom Instinct’ is full of action and surprises and a few new twists… Gardiner’s latest stand-alone is one of this summer’s best reads.” Associated Press

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

Initially I was intimidated by the 775 page count and somewhat mixed reviews, by I really loved this book.  I was pulled in by Theo the main character and found the plot very intriguing, from the tragic death of his mother through an unusual journey of relationships, trauma, guilt, and crime – all with the Goldfinch interwoven.

Sister by Rosamund Lupton

When her pregnant sister Tess goes missing and eventually found dead, Bee does everything she can to get to the bottom of what really happened to her sister.  A page-turning thriller!

The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty

Set in Australia, this was a great story about three women who’s lives intersect in an unexpected way – with a secret that changes them all. This is a puzzle of a story and I found it interesting and suspenseful. Looking forward to reading more from this author!

Magic Hour by Kristen Hannah

This is a  heartwarming and surprising tale of a young, feral girl who is found abandoned in a tree in the town of Rain Valley, in the Pacific Northwest, and the psychiatrist to cares for her.  A good story!

Time for Tea

time for tea“I say let the world go to hell, but I should always have my tea.”

-Fyodor Dostoyevsky

One of the best things about the cooler months is having hot tea on a more regular basis.  You can really drink hot tea anytime, but enjoying a cup of tea in your PJs can become a nightly ritual to look forward to in fall and winter.

Here are some fantastic teas to try!

Harney & Sons

African Autumn – Delicious flavor!  This is an herbal tea made with Rooibos, a South African red bush, and flavored with orange and cranberry.  Not only does it taste really good, it makes the whole room smell divine while your brewing it!  A great choice for fall.

Love Life – Visit the Harney & Sons tasting room in Millerton, NY and you’ll be hooked. We can’t enough of this one. It’s a green tea with coconut, vanilla, and strawberry and it’s delicious!

Yogi – Honey Lavender Stress Relief – This is another Rooibos based tea.  The lavender and chamomile make this one really soothing and relaxing.  One you’ve had a cup, you’re ready for bed!

Good Earth – Sweet & Spicy – This tea has a really tasty cinnamon flavor and is equally good hot and cold.  It doesn’t need any sugar so it’s a great one to drink if you’re watching your calories. Even if you’re not big on cinnamon, give it a whirl.  It actually has a very similar flavor to the Chai Tea that Oprah recently released with Teavana.

Do you have a favorite tea or tea ritual?  Tell us about it below!

P.S.  – Did you know that George Orwell actually wrote an essay on crafting the perfect cup of tea called “A Nice Cup of Tea” back in 1946?  Check it out…

Pajama Food: Donuts

Donuts definitely fall in the category of yummy pajama foods!  There are so may varieties and who can resist a glazed or jelly filled delight with a delicious cup of coffee?  There’s no denying that they’re typically high in sugar, fat, and calories, but this doesn’t mean you can’t indulge every now and again, right?!

Go Local

Independent donut shops have popped up quite a bit in the last few years, and chances are you have a local donut place near you, so scout them out.  And, if you’re travelling, check out Travel + Leisure’s list of America’s Best Donuts for donut shops to visit in several cities!

Make Your Own

There are tons of creative and delicious donut recipes out there as well, so why not try your hand at a homemade batch!  Here are some great recipes…

Classic Glazed Donuts from Epicurious

Cookies ‘N Cream Donuts from Shugary Sweets

Donut Holes from Tablespoon

Vanilla Creme-Filled Donuts from Brown Eyed Baker

Lemon Glazed Blueberry Donuts from A Kitchen Addiction

Triple Chocolate Donuts from Style Me Pretty

Take the Krispy Kreme Challenge

If you’ve never heard of it, the Krispy Kreme Challenge is an annual charity race that takes place in Raleigh, NC, that started as a dare between a few NC State students.  It soon got national coverage with people coming in from all over the country.  As they say, the challenge “epitomizes the test of physical fitness and gastrointestinal fortitude”.  Its a 5 mile run, but halfway through participants are challenged to eat a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts, and then run the rest of the race.  Now that’s a challenge!
