Stepping Out In Pajamas

Pajamas are showing up in more places than just your bedroom this season. Earlier this fall we saw Rachel Roy donning her Bedhead PJ’s on the red carpet and Swedish fashion blogger, Elin Kling, shopping in her loungewear.

Now, Lucky Magazine is weighing in on the trend. They say you can wear your pajamas out in public and still be the best dressed in the room. Of course, we couldn’t agree more.

To help transform your nighttime look into night wear, Lucky provides five easy rules.

The most important in our book: Don’t neglect your hair and makeup. Take a shower, do your hair and makeup as usual, put on a freshly ironed pair of pj’s and feel confident stepping out in style.

More Pajamas In Fashion

Rachel Roy is not the only fashionista wearing pajamas as a statement piece.

Swedish style blogger, Elin Kling recently stepped out to do some errands in her sleepwear. In her blog post, Kling said she was in need of some retail therapy and wore the pajamas to get out for a quick break.

The Blackbook.com commented that Kling’s cotton pajama pants fit perfectly with the printed wide-leg pant trend.

Pajamas On The Red Carpet

Of course, WE know that pajamas are not just for sleeping anymore.

It’s common to wear pajamas when lounging around the house and occasionally to run an errand or two. Kids are even wearing pajamas to school.

But, how about pajamas on the red carpet? That’s new, even to us.

Last week, fashion designer Rachel Roy (who counts fashion icons like First Lady Michelle Obama as clients) gave new meaning to the term “evening wear”. Roy showed up to the premier of the new film One Day in Bedhead striped pajamas.

To upgrade her pj’s for the red carpet, Roy rolled up the sleeves and paired them with heels, jewelry and a clutch handbag.

She told InStyle that the outfit was inspired by her daughter.

“I have an eleven-year-old and I like to show her that it’s OK to take fashion risks and to have fun and tell a story with fashion,” she told InStyle. “It was hard for me to find something to go with these shoes where I didn’t feel too dressed up and too done. So I thought, this is how I can wear these shoes by Mr. Blahnik!”

You can get Roy’s look with Bedhead’s White and Blue Pinstripe Pajama set. Available at ThePajamaCompany.com in sizes small, medium, large and extra-large for $146.

Footie Fun

Footed pajamas are often thought of as night wear for small kids, but both teens and adults are now wearing footies again!  Many older people like footie pajamas because they bring back memories of the fun they had in their childhood. Historians disagree on the history of the footed pajama. Some say they were brought from Persia in the 1800s, while others claim India was the place of origin and that they were brought to the West in 1880. The word “pajama” itself according to linguists originates from an Indian word meaning “leg clothes.”Pajamas rapidly grew in popularity in Europe where they helped people stay warm during the cold winter nights. By 1898, footed pajamas were advertised for sale in London, and their popularity continued to grow from that point. So why are footie pajamas so warm? Well, the fact that the pajamas are one-piece helps prevent heat from escaping too far from the body. With non-footie pajamas there are a lot of “vents” that allow the warmth generated by the human body to dissipate. The footie traps this warmth and allows it to circulate throughout the inside of the pajama area including around the feet. Since the feet are often the first thing to get cold, the footie pajama was really a blessing in helping people get to sleep in cold climates. Even in the modern age with our centrally heated homes, we can still use footed pajamas to help keep the heating bill lower while still sleeping comfortably.  In fact, saving electricity on heating also has the added benefit of reducing our impact on the environment.

While footed pajamas were originally popular with people of all ages, they eventually became worn mainly by children because of their sensitivity to the cold. However, teens and adults are again taking to these comfortable pajamas both for their warmth, and because they bring back cherished memories from their youth. Footed pajamas are just plain fun for all ages.  We think you will love our great selection of footies from Big Feet Pajama Company, Footzies and Snug as a Bug.

Pajama Happiness at The End of The Day

It’s been another long, hard day. You fought your boss over an unreasonable deadline, fought the lines at the grocery store, and fought traffic to get back home. You’ve been fighting a headache all day, and now you have to fight to get the kids to do their homework, eat their veggies and get in the shower.

But then, finally, the kids are in bed. You pull your pajamas from the drawer and slip them on, savoring their soft, comfy feel. You finish the ensemble with a pair of fuzzy socks and then drop, exhausted, into the recliner in the living room. You curl up under a blanket to your favorite book or television show and feel the stresses of the day melting away.

Is there anything more blissful than slipping into your favorite pair of pajamas at the end of a trying day? Whatever your personal preferences – cool cotton, cozy flannels, pj pant with tee, footies or lounger sets; gentle, subdued tones or bright, vivid colors – there is just something about pajamas that makes you happy.

Perhaps it’s the feel of the pajamas, the fabric rubbing against your skin, cool in the summer and warm in the winter, arousing your senses. Maybe it’s the ritual: the predictable, routine winding down for bed at the end of the night counteracts the chaos of the day. Or it could be purely psychological – the very act of shedding the clothing of your hectic days and donning the attire of rejuvenating sleep puts your mind at ease, getting you ready for a gentle repose. More than likely, it’s a combination of all three.

Whatever the reasons, climbing into pajamas does indeed relax the tired muscles in your body and the slow competing thoughts racing through your brain. Pajamas wash away the realities of the day and replace them with your most favorite dreams, your stargazing fantasies.

In fact, when the pressures of life become overwhelming, have you ever spent an entire Saturday in your favorite pair of pajamas? It’s the ultimate defiance against the rest of the world, against everyone telling you what to do and how to do it. You decide how to live your life. You decide to enjoy an entire day curled up on the couch in the most comfortable fabric you can fathom. The stresses of the world fade away, and the day is yours to enjoy in your calming, happy pajamas!

Pajamas…Perfect Holiday Money Savers?

Maybe you would never have considered pajamas as a holiday money saving opportunity…but this holiday season, that is exactly what everyone’s  favorite sleepwear is turning out to be.  The popularity of pajamas as gifts is climbing, especially with the rising costs of heating and clothing.  Many families are lowering the thermostat this winter, resulting in parents and children bundling up at night.  As for daily wear, teens and tweens are wearing pajama pants as daywear.  (And of course, we at The Pajama Company, love that!)

Many families aren’t able to afford purchasing those “just for fun” gifts, so they are turning to pajamas to fit that need.  The wide variety of styles and designs available practically ensure that parents can find pajamas that reflect the personalities and interests of their kids.

In addition to pajamas being a popular item this holiday season, pajama-centric activities are also seeing an increase.  Instead of traveling this year, or putting expense into extravagant decorations and meals, families are spending time getting into their pajamas to bake cookies, cakes and other holiday treats.

Parents and kids are donning pajamas for family DVD nights, for family bedtime story nights, for game nights.  We love “Pajama” nights.  Some popcorn, pizza, warm apple cider and classic holiday movies can make a perfect evening at home.  Pajamas are turning into this year’s big holiday money saver and fun maker…who knew?
