How to Have More Down Time

Happy first day of spring! It’s time for warmer weather, more sunshine, and time outdoors!

Spring is the perfect time to check in with yourself. Think about your everyday life for a minute.  Is being busy a badge of honor for you? We place such a high value on being productive, that we forget how important it is to chill out. The truth is that taking the time to relax your brain and body will actually make you more productive and a happier person. Time off let’s you come back to work refreshed and energized.

We ALL need more down time – time to veg out, be lazy, relax, and rejuvinate! Here’s how to have more of it:

1. Schedule it.

Yes, you may have to actually put regular down time in your calendar or save an entire day during the week. It’s really easy to let other priorities take over, and before you know it your supposed relaxation time can be taken over by other things. This is why we suggest scheduling your time off. Take Sunday as your unplugged day. Or maybe spend every Thursday night in a cozy spot with a book and cup of tea and no other distractions!

And here’s another tip: you’ll also want to think about weekends away. We tend to schedule our longer vacations because we have to give advance notice at work or have other plans in place to make them happen.  But weekends can slip by. So take some time now and plan a few fun weekend getaways – the mountains, the beach, whatever calls to you. Add those to your calendar as well.

2. Be vigilant.

You know yourself better than anyone else. What distracts you?  If you know you can’t be trusted to layoff of email or social media, have a no laptop and/or cell phone rule on your relaxation days.

What creates stress for you? If you’re unable to enjoy time off because of things hanging over your head – work projects, house chores – schedule specific time for those things too. You’ll probably be able to rest and enjoy with much more ease once you’ve cleared your head and are conscious about how you intend to spend your time.

You’ll also want to be vigilant about protecting your time from other’s agendas. Once your down time is scheduled, make it non negotiable, no matter what!

3. Plan Ahead.

Consider what you’d like to do on your day off. Are you a stay in bed all day, lounger type? If so you might want to find a good book to read or stock up on some magazines for pure entertainment! Be sure your bed is extra comfy with clean sheets and plenty of pillows and blankets. Get your cozy on!

Do you spend most of your days in a cubicle and need more time outside? Hang the hammock. Pack the picnic basket. Search out some new hiking trails. Whatever you want to do, be sure you’re ready and you have what you need so you can make the most of your day!

Happy Friday, friends!

What piece of clothing in your wardrobe is most important to your well being? Well, pajamas, of course! Here are eight ways that pajamas bring on the good spirit…

1. You uniform for relaxation – slip on your PJs at the end of a loooong day, and watch your mood transform and your cares dissolve.

2. Fun prints! – pajamas invite in the free spirit and self expression. Monkeys…Bacon Enthusiasts…Sushi…and the list goes on…

3.  Sleepovers – what’s a sleepover staying up late with your friends without your favorite fun PJs?

4. Family time – pajamas mean fun family time: movie nights, Netflix marathons, lazy breakfasts, holiday mornings…

5. Comfort – has there ever been and will there ever will be more comfortable clothes than pajamas?!

6. Pajama Days – lounging and relaxing ALL day in your jams. H-A-P-P-Y!

7. Fun songs – jammies inspire fun songs like this one!

8. Feeling like a kid again – pajamas have a way of bringing you right back to childhood. Especially our footies!

1. Pajamas. They do indeed make us very happy, especially putting them on at the end of a long, tired day.

2. This amusing post – How to Carry Off Pyjamas from Mr. Porter. We love that he shares our belief that comfort at the end of the day is important. What’s more he argues that men’s pajamas should be as” elegant as a good suit”, because after all, “the people who see you in your loungewear are the people whose opinions really count – wives, girlfriends, partners and children.” Sounds like a men’s pajama revolution!

3. Coffee all day. We feel so strongly that we’ve dedicated a Pinterest board to it.

4. Holiday Spirit. Yep, The Pajama Company headquarters is already embracing the spirit of the season. We’re playing our Christmas music favorites and check out our logo decked out in his Santa hat!

5. Frog Wisdom. Feeling inspired by Kermit the Frog’s wise words…”Life’s like a movie. Write your own ending.”

How to Start the Day off Right

start your dayHave you ever noticed how much better your whole day is when it starts out right?

Instead of rushing around, trying to find your car keys or your other shoe, you feel relaxed and ready for the day.  Rather than skipping breakfast at home and grabbing something on the go, you actually have time to eat and enjoy something healthy.

There are a couple of little things you can do daily to lay the foundation of a good day. Putting a few small habits in place can make a world of difference…

Do a Little Night Before Prep

Doing a few things to get ready the night before can really help to make your morning go more smoothly.  Here are a few suggestions:

– Cue the coffee pot to brew upon your wake up time.

– Plan what you’re going to wear and lay out everything you need to get dressed, including shoes!

– Take a look at your to do list.  Decide: what are the top 3 priorities you can commit to for the coming day?

– Gather what you need by the door – wallet, keys, purse, work bag, etc.  If you can’t find something, now is the time to go chase it! 🙂

Eat a Good Breakfast

Breakfast gets you going in the morning, so give yourself the time to make a decent one and to actually enjoy it!  Here are 16 Quick Breakfast Ideas to get you started.

Enjoy 10 Minutes of Solitude

Take at least 10 minutes out of your day to relax.  Read a chapter or passage from an inspirational book.  Simply sit in the quiet and sip your coffee or tea.  Meditate. The point is to give your self a few minutes to get centered.  Once you’ve done this, it’s much easier to bring yourself back to a more peaceful state of mind later in the day.

Decide How You Want to Feel

This is my favorite. Yup, that’s right, you get to decide how you want your day to feel, and it’s really very simple.  How do you see your day going? Do you want to feel connected to friends or coworkers?  Do you want to feel inspired?  Do you want to feel joyful?  Once you know how you want to feel, ask yourself what 2 things you can do that day to specifically connect to that feeling.  For example, if you want to feel connected at work, maybe you share a new idea in the morning meeting, or invite a new colleague out to lunch, or make a point to ask your boss about her kid’s soccer game.

Although some of us may be gearing up for back to school, we still have a little over a month of the official summer season left!

That means its time to get the most out of the warmer weather and long days, before the change of seasons is upon us.

Suffering from the Mondays? Here are 15 Cures!

Mondays can be well, let’s face it…tough.

Especially in the height of the summer, when the sun is shining and all you want to do is play hooky! Monday might even make you might think of this scene from Office Space.

So just in case you’re suffering from a case of the Mondays, here are some little things you can to do to beat out those blues…

1. Wear your favorite outfit. The one you feel awesome in!

2. Bring in breakfast for you’re co-workers. Doing something nice for others will feel good!

3. Take a dance break!

4. Another meeting? Declare it a walking one and get outside.

5. Meet a friend at a fancy restaurant for lunch.

6. Work somewhere different. Escape the cubicle and head to the coffee shop!

7. Plan a Monday night Happy Hour. Why not?!

8. Wear your PJs to work! Add some heels and makeup and you’ll look fabulous.

9. Sleep in and go into the office late. You deserve it!

10. Take a lunch time yoga class.

11. Treat yourself to a colorful bouquet of flowers.

12. Take a Pajama Day!

13. Sneak out early and go to the movies.

14. Turn on some fun and uplifting music. Pick something you don’t normally listen to.

15. Take a break and treat yourself to something sweet! A decadent truffle? Gourmet cupcake?
