Best TV Shows to Binge Watch in 2018

The Best TV Shows to Binge in Your Pajamas

We in the Northeast have endured another blizzard, but more pajama time is A-OK with us! Snow days and quiet Friday nights are perfect for binge-watching gripping television shows in the comfort of your living room. If you tend to binge-watch your television shows, you’re not alone.

It may seem counterintuitive in this age of short, quippy social media posts and funny cat videos, but humans have a psychological urge to watch entire seasons of television from start finish — no matter how dark, twisted, and complicated the storylines. According to Netflix, three out of four viewers watch the entire first season of Breaking Bad in one sitting!

Psychologists believe that we binge-watch because we crave an escape from our busy lives. As it turns out, occasionally binge-watching television shows can help alleviate symptoms of stress. So put on your coziest pair of pajama pants, pop some popcorn, and stream one of these binge-worthy TV shows. Doctor’s orders.

If you like intrigue, action, ‘80s nostalgia, and brutally honest depictions of marriage, you’re going to love The Americans. Stream on Amazon.

2. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

If you like to laugh and love a little action, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the breakout hit for you. Starring SNL funnyman Andy Samberg and acting veterans Andre Braugher and Terry Crews, the TV show follows the hijinx of the NYPD’s fictional 99th Precinct. The plot revolves around the professional and personal life of Detective Jake Peralta (Samberg), an immature but talented police officer. Hilarity ensues. Stream on Hulu.

3. Westworld

For the sci-fi fanatics, Westworld is a thriller that takes place in a technologically advanced Wild West-themed amusement park populated by android hosts. Westworld caters to high-paying guests, who may indulge in whatever they wish within the park without retribution from their hosts — including murder. The series begins as a routine update in the hosts’ programming causes unusual deviations in their behavior, concerning park staff. A few of the hosts become sentient and learn the truth about themselves and the world they are forced to live in. Stream on HBO Go.

Perfect if you were a fan of the old series Desperate Housewives.

5. Orphan Black

Sci-fi is clearly coming back to mainstream television with shows like Westworld and this hit, Orphan Black. The Canadian series raises questions about the moral and ethical implications of cloning. Viewers can watch the entire plot from start to finish, as all five seasons are now available for streaming. Stream on Amazon.

6. Peaky Blinders

If you enjoyed The Godfather trilogy, know that Peaky Blinders is essentially the British version. Golden Globe winner Tracee Ellis Ross wears a lot of cute pajama sets as her character Bo Johnson in the hit comedy series ‘Black-ish.’

10. Black-ish

Network after network is producing gloomy, depressing content but Black-ish on ABC is a much-needed standout family sitcom. Loosely based on the family life of creator Kenya Barris, the show doesn’t shy away from discussions of family, race, gender equality, or politics, but addresses these hot-button topics in a way that is timely, relatable, and approachable. The plot follows family man Andre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) as he struggles to maintain a sense of cultural identity while raising his children in a predominantly white, upper-middle-class neighborhood. Every episode is smart, sweet, and guaranteed to make you laugh until your belly hurts. Stream on Hulu.

We’re Making This Snow Day A “Movie Day”

#SnowDay

By Ellie Badanes

Here in CT, we are preparing for #Blizzard2017 now heading our way. We know that means one thing, a Snow Day! A Snow Day in March is unexpected and of course happy for every child tonight knowing tomorrow is a day to play and relax. For kids of all ages there is a tinge of excitement in anticipation of the Winter Wonderland predicted to greet us in the morning hours. We know what we will be wearing for our Snow Day, pajamas of course, but what will we be watching? Here are a few ideas:

Back to the Future

Who doesn’t love this classic movie in which Michael J. Fox goes back in time in his DeLorean time machine? (Hellloooo, McFly!) It’s a feel good movie and an all-time favorite rainy day go-to. There are actually two sequels, but the first one is really the best.

Home Alone

A classic wintertime movie that charms and entertains every single time. Who doesn’t need a little “Christmas” even if it’s March?

Happy Feet

To get into the spirit of the day, what’s better than heading to Antartica for some penguin tap dancing?

Toy Story

If you don’t know Toy Story, it’s a touching family movie about a boy named Andy and his toys, that’s well loved across generations. Action figure Buzz Lightyear and Woody the cowboy steal the show, in addition to Mr. Potato Head! What makes us watch this movie over and over? It’s a sweet story and even after many years, the animation is still really cool. And like Back to the Future, it’s a trilogy, so a perfect choice for a rainy Saturday movie marathon!

Wedding Crashers

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson play two womanizing friends who regularly “crash” weddings to pick up girls. All is well and good until one of them actually falls for one of their conquests (played by Rachel McAdams). This movie is totally entertaining. There are so many funny lines which makes it one you have to watch again!

Chef

This is a great story about a chef (played by Jon Favreau) who looses his job in a restaurant and decides to start up his own food truck, and bonds with his son along the way.  Super cast and a totally charming movie. (On Netflix)

Notting Hill

You’ve probably seen it more than once, but Notting Hill is one of those movies to watch again and again. A British romantic comedy about a bookseller (Hugh Grant) who falls in love with a famous American actress (Julia Roberts). Funny and sweet. (On Netflix)

Hector and the Search for Happiness

A charming story about Hector, a psychiatrist who sets out on a journey to find out what really makes people happy. Lighthearted and fun, and will make you think!  Watch the trailer here. (On Netflix)

You’ve Got Mail

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan totally make this movie, which takes place back in the AOL days. We love Meg Ryan’s adorable pajama scenes, and of course, can’t beat the happy ending.

Something’s Gotta Give

Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Amanda Peet? Plus, scenes from a gorgeous East Hampton beach house and Paris. Need we say more? This love story will make you laugh, and you’ll love the sweet ending.

Uncle Buck

John Candy, enough said.

Legally Blonde

Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon, breaks up with her boyfriend and decides to follow him to law school and get him back. Yes, totally silly, but equally charming. (On Netflix)

3. Nothing beats cooking in pajamas. Make your favorite Valentine’s Day treat (our favorite is banana bread!)

4. Pajama dance party! This song will get you started: The Pajama Song.

5. Celebrating with a group? Have a pajama game night. Play your favorite board game or make up a game of Celebrities or Charades.

A Chill in The Air

Well, I guess we had better grin and bear it.  There is a chill in the air.  It’s that time of year to switch from pajamas with flip flops to pajamas with uggs or socks or slippers.  It’s that time of year when pajamas feel cozy and warm and just right.  Somehow pajamas just seem perfect for the newspaper and a glass of wine, facebook and a coffee, TV and munchies, DVD and popcorn, twitter and any of the above!  It’s fall.  It’s here and we will somehow cope.  Images of a roaring fire, a blanket, pajamas, that book we meant to read all summer, the movie we can’t believe we never watched (and all our buds are talking about it..embarrassing!) , a warm mug of something wonderful, and of course fabulous pajamas fill our heads tonight.  How sweet that pajamas can just make the world a better place.  All is good.
