How to Host a Winter Spa Day in Your Pajamas

How to Host a Winter Spa Day

We are barely through winter but our skin has been through the ringer: holiday stress, wayward skincare routines, loads of sugar, and the season’s first blizzard. As we approach winter’s halfway mark, give your tired skin some TLC. Gather your best girlfriends for a winter spa day.

Hosting a winter spa day is far less expensive than the real deal. Also, many people abstain from sugar or alcohol during the month of January, so it’s a way to host a party that doesn’t put an emphasis on food and drink — but who would pass up a chance to sip a mimosa in a bathrobe?

Everything You Need for a Winter Spa Day at Home

1. BYOB

Bring your own bathrobe, that is. Encourage everyone to wear clothes they can truly lounge in (think ultrasoft pajama pants) and their fluffiest, coziest bathrobe and slippers. Slipping into a relaxed state of mind starts with the clothes we wear. When you go to a spa, you are provided with a robe and encouraged to wear soft, loose-fitting clothing. Encourage your guests to do the same. Let’s be real: pants with zippers are for the birds.

2. Minimalist Magic

Tidy up your living room so everything looks neat and decluttered with a minimalist spa feel. Hide knick knacks and run the vacuum. Turn off the TV and turn on some ‘spa tunes’ on Pandora or Spotify: any soothing instrumentals that incorporate nature sounds like rain, gentle thunder, or birdsong. Make sure there are plenty of pillows and space for people to get comfortable. Set up stacks of magazines throughout the room. Strategically place some fresh flowers to bring the outdoors in and shake off the winter blues.

Create a Spa Atmosphere

The traditional blend of lavender and peppermint has an instant, calming effect.

3. Aromatherapy

The first thing we notice when we step into a spa is the smell. The traditional blend of lavender and peppermint has an instant, calming effect. The scent of lavender is well-known for its stress-relieving benefits. Peppermint has a cooling, refreshing effect and is used in aromatherapy to increase mental alertness. Many claim that the oil has natural energy-boosting properties. Add peppermint and lavender scented candles or oil diffusers to the room so your guests can breathe deep and relax in a spa-like atmosphere.

4. Drinks and Light Bites

If you want to keep the menu alcohol-free out of respect for your friends abstaining in January, opt for spa classics like cucumber water. Simply slice a cleaned cucumber (peeled or unpeeled, your preference) into ½ inch slices. Add to a pitcher of water with ice. Allow to sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour, but for best results let sit overnight. You can make lemon water by swapping out lemons and following the same process. Opt for lighter food like fresh fruit, hummus, smoked salmon, pita wedges, veggies, or salad wraps. If you’re including adult beverages, mimosas are a surefire hit.

5. Spa Stations

Unless you’re a licensed massage therapist, the spa stations will be simple, but fun. Set up an adjoining bathroom with tea lights, exfoliating face washes, moisturizers, and face masks for a DIY facial station. Set up an area of the living room with nail polish remover, various polishes and finishes, and hand cream for manicures and pedicures. Print out instructions for shoulder and neck massages and guests can take turns giving each other massages. Lastly add a hair styling station with dry shampoo, spray-in conditioner, styling products, a curling iron, flat iron, combs, ties, and bobby pins. Have fun trying out online tutorials and styling each other’s hair.

While your party won’t be on par with a 5-star spa, you and your guests are sure to have a great time catching up, enjoying snacks, and giggling at each other’s face masks. How to Host a Winter Pajama Party

How to Host a ‘Winter Wonderland’ Pajama Party

After we unplug the Christmas tree and pack away our holiday decorations, many people feel a touch of ‘post-holiday blues’ because there is nothing left to celebrate and a long winter ahead. Don’t feel sad! There is a lot to celebrate after the holidays!

For one, we aren’t faced with the daunting task of entertaining in-laws and houseguests for another weekend packed with holiday traditions and formalities. Those of us who travel aren’t faced with another weekend in an airport, dragging luggage and children from coast to coast to visit family. The magical, sparkly, snowy winter weather is still going strong, which means we have a lot to celebrate — right at home.

Without all the holiday obligations, we can gleefully spend the rest of the winter season in hibernation. Why not celebrate what’s left of the season with a laidback ‘Winter Wonderland’ pajama party? Since the kids will be on winter break until after the New Year, you can keep the party to just your family or invite another family to join in. It’s also a great excuse to use those matching family pajamas one more time…

Why You Need a Pajama Dance Party

‘Tis the season for stress. According to a recent study conducted by the Harvard Medical School Department of Neurology, 90 percent of Americans experience a heightened state of stress during the holidays. The most prevalent causes of holiday stress are, unsurprisingly, money and family. These two stress factors combined with additional responsibilities and social commitments create a hectic holiday environment.

The dramatic departure from the comfort of our daily routine raises our stress levels. Some people choose to relieve the pressure with a post-holiday vacation, massage, or spa day, but this isn’t an option for everyone. Since most people are strapped for money and time during the holidays, these are not practical solutions.

We’re Making This Snow Day A “Movie Day”

#SnowDay

By Ellie Badanes

Here in CT, we are preparing for #Blizzard2017 now heading our way. We know that means one thing, a Snow Day! A Snow Day in March is unexpected and of course happy for every child tonight knowing tomorrow is a day to play and relax. For kids of all ages there is a tinge of excitement in anticipation of the Winter Wonderland predicted to greet us in the morning hours. We know what we will be wearing for our Snow Day, pajamas of course, but what will we be watching? Here are a few ideas:

Back to the Future

Who doesn’t love this classic movie in which Michael J. Fox goes back in time in his DeLorean time machine? (Hellloooo, McFly!) It’s a feel good movie and an all-time favorite rainy day go-to. There are actually two sequels, but the first one is really the best.

Home Alone

A classic wintertime movie that charms and entertains every single time. Who doesn’t need a little “Christmas” even if it’s March?

Happy Feet

To get into the spirit of the day, what’s better than heading to Antartica for some penguin tap dancing?

Toy Story

If you don’t know Toy Story, it’s a touching family movie about a boy named Andy and his toys, that’s well loved across generations. Action figure Buzz Lightyear and Woody the cowboy steal the show, in addition to Mr. Potato Head! What makes us watch this movie over and over? It’s a sweet story and even after many years, the animation is still really cool. And like Back to the Future, it’s a trilogy, so a perfect choice for a rainy Saturday movie marathon!

Wedding Crashers

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson play two womanizing friends who regularly “crash” weddings to pick up girls. All is well and good until one of them actually falls for one of their conquests (played by Rachel McAdams). This movie is totally entertaining. There are so many funny lines which makes it one you have to watch again!

Chef

This is a great story about a chef (played by Jon Favreau) who looses his job in a restaurant and decides to start up his own food truck, and bonds with his son along the way.  Super cast and a totally charming movie. (On Netflix)

Notting Hill

You’ve probably seen it more than once, but Notting Hill is one of those movies to watch again and again. A British romantic comedy about a bookseller (Hugh Grant) who falls in love with a famous American actress (Julia Roberts). Funny and sweet. (On Netflix)

Hector and the Search for Happiness

A charming story about Hector, a psychiatrist who sets out on a journey to find out what really makes people happy. Lighthearted and fun, and will make you think!  Watch the trailer here. (On Netflix)

You’ve Got Mail

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan totally make this movie, which takes place back in the AOL days. We love Meg Ryan’s adorable pajama scenes, and of course, can’t beat the happy ending.

Something’s Gotta Give

Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Amanda Peet? Plus, scenes from a gorgeous East Hampton beach house and Paris. Need we say more? This love story will make you laugh, and you’ll love the sweet ending.

Uncle Buck

John Candy, enough said.

Legally Blonde

Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon, breaks up with her boyfriend and decides to follow him to law school and get him back. Yes, totally silly, but equally charming. (On Netflix)

5 Treats for a Cozy Winter Weekend

winter weekend

Happy Friday, friends! Brrrrrr…it’s chilly out there! Don’t know about you, but the cold and windy weather certainly makes it harder to get outside. This weather makes us want to curl up and hibernate. Are you with us?

We’re guessing you are, so we’re sharing 5 of our favorite treats to enjoy on cozy winter weekends, for a little something extra special:

1. The Blizzard Cocktail

Yep, we’re starting off with the hard stuff. The Blizzard Cocktail is a combination of coffee, whiskey, and liqueurs (hello hazelnut and Irish cream) topped off with whipped cream. Does it get any better than that? Maybe this weekend it’s a Sunday Funday in PJs at your house? Click here for the recipe.

2. Gourmet Popcorn

Did you ever realize how many ways there are to make popcorn? Sweet, savory, candy coated or taco flavored, we have a round-up of 10 delicious gourmet popcorn recipes for you. Or, get creative and invent your own. But if you do, be sure to share the recipe with us!

3. Homemade Donuts

Why not make donuts at home and not even leave the house? The best part is you get to eat your donut straight out of the oven, still warm. Want some easy inspiration? Yummy!

4. Vanilla Chai Tea Latte

A nice piping hot cup of tea is so soothing when it’s cold and making it a vanilla chai is even better. Here’s a great recipe for a real chai latte with the spices and all. It’s a little extra effort to make from scratch, but so worth it.  Want more caffeine? Throw in a shot or two of espresso as they suggest for a “dirty chai”.

5. Hot Cocoa Cookies

Gotta have your chocolate fix? These chewy chocolate hot cocoa cookies (with a marshmallow inside!) will hit the spot for your weekend treat.

Add your flannels and fuzzy slippers, and you’re set for a cozy winter weekend!

Get Cozy: 4 Books to Stay in & Read

GET COZY

The colder winter temps have sure set in, and as they say, “baby it’s cold outside!” We recommend staying in and getting cozy this weekend. Throw something easy in the crockpot or order a pizza. Think hot chocolate, flannel PJs, and your most favorite warm blanket. Add a Netflix marathon or one of these great reads and you are set…

1. The Royal We by Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan

This is a totally entertaining and sweet love story loosely based on Prince William and Princess Kate, written by two bloggers. Think an American Bridget Jones-type falls for the prince. A fun and addicting novel.

2. Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

If you’ve never read this classic, it is a must. It’s easy to see why it’s been called “one of the most influential novels of the 20th century”. Get your coffee ready: it’s a haunting, suspenseful, gothic romance – and it’s a page turner. So good!

3. We Are Water by Wally Lamb

From USA Today: “It’s a sign of a good novel when the reader slowly savors the final chapters, both eager to discover the ending and dreading saying goodbye to the characters. We Are Water is a book worth diving into.” Based on Wally Lamb’s track record, this story about a Connecticut family’s secrets and how they play out in the present day is sure to be a pajamas-all-day kind of read.

4. Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart

From the Associated Press: “Well-written with sharply drawn characters and the occasional plot twist, Girl Waits With Gun is an absorbing throwback to a bygone era. It’s a solid book, and Stewart’s helpful notes allow readers to appreciate just how much of the tale is true.” On our list for sure! (And, you can snag it for $3.99 on a Kindle deal right now.)

Happy reading, friends!
